How to Convert HEIC to JPG — iPhone Photos Made Compatible

If you own an iPhone, you've probably run into this problem: you take a photo, try to share or open it on a Windows PC or Android phone, and get an error saying the file type isn't supported. That's because iPhone saves photos in HEIC format — and here's how to convert them to JPG.

What Is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format introduced with iOS 11. It offers smaller file sizes with similar or better quality compared to JPG — but it's not universally supported outside of Apple devices.

Where HEIC doesn't open: older Windows computers, most Android phones, many websites, image editors like older Photoshop versions, and email clients.

Method 1: Free Online Converter (No Software Needed)

The easiest way is to use FZ-Tools's free HEIC to JPG Converter. It works entirely in your browser — no upload to external servers, completely private.

  1. Go to FZ-Tools HEIC to JPG
  2. Drop your .heic files into the converter (supports batch conversion)
  3. Adjust quality slider if needed (92% is recommended)
  4. Click Convert All to JPG
  5. Download individual files or click Download All

Method 2: Change iPhone Settings (Prevent HEIC at Source)

You can stop your iPhone from taking HEIC photos altogether:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Scroll down to Camera
  3. Tap Formats
  4. Select Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency

Your camera will now save photos as JPG. Note: this slightly increases file size.

Method 3: Email to Yourself (iOS Auto-Converts)

When you share a HEIC photo from iPhone via email, iOS automatically converts it to JPG for compatibility. Open Photos, select the image, tap Share → Mail, and send it to yourself. Download the attachment on any device and it will be JPG.

Can I Convert HEIC to PNG Instead?

Yes. If you need transparency support, use our HEIC to PNG Converter. PNG is lossless and preserves full quality, but files will be larger than JPG.
